7 Tips You Can Learn From Working With Uber

UBER...This giant, taxi-inspired, private transport company has a unique business scheme that allows for any man or woman with some entrepreneurial sense to be employed on their own time and sometimes on their own terms. At any given time, UBER has in its employ a good number of ex-startup businessmen and entrepreneurs. Here are some of the lessons they’ve picked up:

1. Stay focused.  One ex-CEO says, running a small business is a lot easier than working at Uber. You find yourself busy all the time and can easily get caught up in the day and night activities. But he’s learned how to stay focused and manage his time better.

2. Be aggressive. If you’re seen as being successful, a lot of other people will be trying to do the same thing you’re doing. What will spell the difference and your staying ahead will be dependent on how fast you move, how big you bet and how relentlessly you pursue your company branding or your personal brand, or whatever it is you’re selling.

3. Admit not knowing everything. It’s not a surprise for most people to think good managers have all the answers. Working at UBER actually made an ex-entrepreneur realize that the real strength lies in managers who have the courage to admit they don’t know everything and are willing to learn from people who do.

4. Set your priorities. If you’re into long term projects, it’ll make sense to do some thoughtful prioritization. You can’t just stamp “Urgent” on all of the projects that come your way.  Prioritizing will help strike a healthy sound balance.

5. Seek input of other people. Ask for their opinions. When you’re surrounded by good people who mean well, they’ll elevate your work. Compare what you’re doing with what they’re doing. It’ll push you to think differently and pick up some new skills. Before you know it, your craft has improved tremendously.

6. Make every action count. When you’re into a small business startup, just about everything you do makes an impact. In a huge company like UBER, you could lose sight of this sense of ownership. Be aware of this and remember to keep the same attitude. You can make every action count.

7. Keep that purpose in mind. If you don’t have any. have one. When you have this all defined and clearly envisioned, it’ll be your roadmap to success. It’ll tell you precisely where you’re going, how far away you are from it and push you hard to think of ways to bring you several steps closer. At UBER, their purpose is simple and clear – to provide transportation for everyone, everywhere.

Sometimes, working in a successful company like UBER before starting up your small business could be a terrific help because it opens up your mind to tried and tested perspectives. The foregoing lessons should serve as some collective pillars of support when you do decide to bring out your interesting service with your own personal branding.
